Sabres Free Agent Choices

The list of players available for the Sabres are shrinking. Today I sum up one of the Sabres choices, Brendan Shanahan, the first on the list.

Brendan Shanahan

Shanahan is a Left Winger and played on the Rangers last year along side of Jagr. He is a tough veteran who will add instant leadership to any team. He has played in the NHL for 19 years on the following teams; New Jersey Devils, St. Louis Blues, Hartford Whalers, Detroit Red Wings, and the NY Rangers. In his career he has scored 627 goals, 667 assists, and was a +155 in 1,417 career games. He has won three Stanley Cups on the Devils. If the Sabres snatch him up, it would cost around $4 million but I would sign him for more than a year or two due to his age. It is extremely possible that no team will sign him because he may choose to retire.

I feel that Shanahan is not the fix the Sabres need right now. We need to let Vanek step up and earn his way to the face of the franchise. Bringing in Shanahan would only discourage Vanek and leave the Sabres in a huge hole for the next 7 years. The Sabres still have plenty of offense and speed and now need to focus on defense.
